Mallorca Training Tour April 2000
by Iris Mueck, tour started April 2000, submitted 13 August 2010
Europe: Spain

I have followed the whistle... In our group has been so many popular guys; e.g. three participants of the official tour d`Autriche, the president of the Austrian bicycle union... I have been learning... Staying at Palma de Mallorca, we bicycled all the standard tour: Soller, Orient, Puig Major, Gallileio, Randa, etc. A recommended place to go in Spring time. April is the latest - in May the motor bicyclists arrive... Our natural enemies. Enjoy the pictures! Good luck to all the followers!

Bicycletour in Tenerife and La Palma, the steepest island of the world
by Györgyi Gábor, tour started April 2009, submitted 19 January 2010
Europe: Spain

I bicycled 2 weeks in Tenerife and La Palma, the steepest island of the world. Both have mild weather so they are said to be the islands of the forever spring. The clouds fly under the height of 1500m, so above it the Sun always shines and we can see the clouds lower.

In Tenerife I visited the wild Teno mountains with the beautiful Masca, later I ascended up to the 2100m Teide plateau where one can feel as in Arizona. In La Orotava I enjoyed the Loro Park animal park with orca, penguine and dolphine shows, then I cycled through laurelsilva forest next to La Esperanza.

The islands have subtropical climate and subtropical plants, besides I saw a lot of cactusses and sometimes papaya and orange trees. In La Palma I ascended the Roque de los Muchachos (2426 m) from both sides. As I looked around from the ridge of the Caldera crater I could hardly say a word: outside I saw te clouds from above to the infinity, while inside clouds in the half-rounded crater shined by evening sunlights. I had a round the tour in the island and visited volcanos and tropical forest. Wonderful islands!

Uphill cycle tour through France
by Simon Mitchell, tour started May 2009, submitted 2 January 2010
Europe: France, Spain

Foreword :Day 8

This morning I was Lance Armstrong leading the peleton on the road through France to Rodez! No it's OK, I wasn't suffering from heat stroke. I just saw the tell tale still partly decipherable graffiti road markings that told me that my man "Lance Armstrong" & 200 other athletes had cycled this very road. I put my head down & stepped up the cadence racing to my imaginary finish line. Out of breath, but exceedingly happy & content I hoisted my arms & shouted at the top of my voice "KING OF THE WORLD" beating my chest like a gorilla. Not quite the British coolness & understatement I know, but this was my tour, I was a winner & feeling good at what I was doing!

Grab a coffee and pull up an armchair. Travel with me for the next 30 minutes through one of the most scenic Countries in the World. France!

Cycling Gypsies: A Bicycle Odyssey with Dogs
by Fin & Zoa, tour started July 2008, submitted 14 November 2009

We don't just have our house on our bikes, we also have our two dogs, Jack and Paco, along for the ride. That's 60kg of furry luggage and another 50-60kg of non-furry luggage between the two of us! Needless to say we don't go fast but we do go everywhere, refusing to let our extra load stop us from tackling hills with grades of up to 18%. We have been on the road with our two dogs since July 2008. So far we have covered 17,000 kms and 18 countries in continental Europe.

Cycling to Santiago de Compostela
by Tim Devereux, tour started June 2002, submitted 24 June 2009
Europe: Spain

In the first week of June 2002, I cycled with my brother on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. He started from Le Puy, France, and after he'd been on the road for 750 miles, and two weeks, I met him at Sahagun, near Leon, Spain, to cycle the remaining 250 miles to Santiago. This is an account of my journey, and the preparations for it. I have gone into detail about some aspects, which may help anyone else travelling the route.

The journey was to be a pilgrimage, so as well as preparing the bike, and getting myself physically fit, I felt I needed some spiritual preparation. My parish, St Joseph's, Pudsey, was running an Open Retreat in Lent, where instead of going away for a retreat for a day or a weekend, you go for a couple of hours, once a week, for six weeks. I found this period of prayer and reflection very helpful; over the weeks, the support of other members of group was most welcome.

Central Spain by ('bent) Bike
by Wayne Joerding, tour started May 1999, submitted 18 May 2009
Europe: Spain

I had a wonderful time, everywhere I went the people were friendly, the drivers reasonably considerate, and the touring spectacular. Why the Extremadura? The Extremadura is a very interesting part of Spain for any American because the people in Extremadura have had such a profound impact on the history and development of America. It turns out that the two most famous (or infamous) conquistadors, Pizzaro and Cortez, both hail from the Extremadura. Many other Extremadurans joined them in the conquest of central and south America by the Spanish. Why? During the early 1500's, the Extramadura was a relatively undeveloped part of Spain, filled with minor nobility and controlled by absentee landlords. There were few prospects for a second or third son growing up in this region, and it was a tough neighborhood. The region had long been a contested area in the wars between the Moors and the Spaniards, it was dotted with walled towns, and inhabited by enduring people accustomed to hardship and violence. The opportunity for wealth and fame in the Americas was a magnet for aggressive young men who had few prospects for inheritance and were well trained to fight for what they wanted. Some of them did achieve wealth and fame, very few of them died peacefully in their bed.

Started with his short Croatian tours, but made it always longer, and in 2005 didn't stop before the 2700th kilometer in Greece. In the following year he decided to start the real adventure, to cycle out of Europe.

2007 was the year of cycling across Canada, the headwindy way - of course :) After this 9000km trip now he is in the planning stage of the South-American tour for 2009.

Spain -- bicycle tours of two piciclisti who only have bikes in their mind.
by Pinar & Paolo Pinzuti, tour started October 2007, submitted 9 July 2008
Europe: Spain
language: en, it, tr

We visited Spain in October 2007, for 14 days and our route followed from Malaga on the Mediterranean coast, north to Seville, Cordoba and Granada.

The roads varied in condition. Mostly they were in good shape although some of the back roads could be bumpy after being patched over several times. If we had one complaint about Spanish roads it was that sometimes we struggled to find a quiet alternative to busy routes and in cities like Seville it seemed almost impossible to leave without running into endless motorways.

by Conrad Philipp, tour started July 2006, submitted 31 March 2008
Europe: France, Spain

International Cycle Traveling, solo and self contained
by Peter Davis, tour started 2008, submitted 31 March 2008

I'm at one of those grave intellectual impasses that have been known to bring even greater minds than my own to a standstill. I have an orphan sock. Trivia, you say. Ha! I think not.

The cause of this problem is surely the work of that Slovakian KGB Agent, foolishly disguised as a laundress in Svolen. She stole it, I'm sure. Probably for a DNA sample to impress her superiors in Bratislava. They've been following my every move since the kustoms agent in Warsaw asked me the purpose of my visit to Poland. When I answered ``vacation'' the disbelief on his face gave him away. What, doesn't anyone go to Poland on vacation?

But back to the real problem, the orphan sock. The purists among cycle tourists would say, ``Throw it away, it's excess baggage. And while you're at it, cut three inches off that over-long toothbrush handle.'' But the Calvinist in me says, ``Save it. It's a good sock, nearly new.'' I've already reduced the weight of my baggage by losing its mate. Maybe I'll lose another and be back to even and lighter still.

Camino de San Vicente Mártir
by Salva Raga, tour started July 2007, submitted 18 March 2008
Europe: Spain

Raid Pyreneen 2007 - From the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea by bicycle
by Györgyi Gábor, tour started July 2007, submitted 16 November 2007

In 2007 I and the tourmate of mine, Peter Riskó planned cycling in the Pyrenees. The tourist version of the RAID PYRENEEN seemed to be ideal for us. It is 790 kms long, has ca. 18000m heightdifference with 28 cols and we had 10 days for it. Before starting the Raid Pyreneen, we spent 4-5 days in the Pyrenees, in Andorra and visited such climbs as Port Cabus (2300 m), Port d'Envalira (2408 m) and enjoyed the Tour de France feeling. We had fantastic memories at Cirque Gavernie and then in the valley of Cirque Troumouse, where we saw waterfals, and small clouds coming up from the bottom of the valley not much before sunset. I enjoyed very much the legendary climbs of the Pyrenees as the hard (11% for 4 kms) Col du Marie Blanque, Col d'Aubisque, Col du Tourmalet... which we waited very much. With a little bit clouds around us the surroundings of the col was so fantastic which made the Col du Tourmalet one of the most memorable col for me through my 15 years bicycling.

The second half of the Raid went through lower mountains, but we had Col de Mente and Portet d'Aspet, Port de Pailheres as legends. It was a good feeling, that we cycled where famous bicycleracers climbed a few decades before us. Our last day was memorable again with the beautiful Col de Garavel, the mediterranean Col du Palomere with the sight for the sea and the last 20kms along the sea through a few tourist village.
