Our 2008 cycling trip gave us a taste of France. We cycled in Paris, Burgundy, Alsace and Provence. We loved French bakeries and cake shops. This has had some not so good side effects - we came back with extra weight! And that's in spite of cycling over 1000km.

This eight day trip around the volcanic region of Auvergne in the centre of France took us through some surprising ladscapes, nice valleys and some challenging passes (at least challenging for us). On our site you will find the description of our itinerary and brief notes on what we saw with some potentially useful tips for housing.

The idea of freedom and not working is appealing to everyone. Tanya and I have quit our jobs and have left the country (our home, Canada) for a year. We are going to be riding our bicycles through many countries. Moving along at a slow pace, emerging ourselves in the culture. The only goal is to have a good time, not deal with schedules, or due dates and see a part of the world that has always intrigued us.

This is the journal of our travels.

This cycle journal describes my trip from eastern Washington state, through the central basin area of Oregon, across Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Kansas to the Missouri border. Most of this route follows the Adventure Cycling Association Western Express route, famous for it's long distances between towns, food, or water. However, the less traveled central basin of Oregon presents even more challenges requiring careful planning.

We took a five week trip to Chile. About four of the weeks we spent of our bikes, taking our time and having fun. It was a great trip but in hindsight I would recommend a more mountain like bike. We used Lemond Poprad cyclocross bikes. The wheels it turned out were especially not ready for the rough terrain with the touring weight.

People often ask why with budget airlines making travel so inexpensive I still plan on making a bike trip to Thailand. They say the journey may be physically demanding at my age (56) and dangerous as I would ride from Tumpat, Kelantan Malaysia right into the three hot spots in southern Thailand.

The southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani have been terrorized by regular attacks since early 2004, when a separatist movement flared after a lull of more than two decades.

Attacks generally take the form of drive-by shootings and small-scale bombings intended to frighten Buddhist residents into leaving the area. Suspected insurgents mainly target people seen as collaborating with the government, including soldiers, police, informants and civilians.

Burgundy is a great place for cycling: whether your tour is to be short or long, flat or hilly, with emphasis on nature or architecture - in Burgundy you have your choice. For part of our short visit we followed bike paths following the Canal de Bourgogne and Canal du Nirvenais, otherwise we cycled on small roads with almost no traffic through pleasant, but hilly, countryside. We visited Auxerre, Tonnerre, Avallon, Pontigny, Semur-en-Auxois ...

I ve actually done quite a number of bike-trips myself. It was always a pleasure to be out in the nowhere for longer period of time just moving forward on two wheels.

Finally, after a longer period of absence from travelling I could free two months again. This time the challenge was to find a way of cycling with the entire family, with Juri (4) and Lenya (1), and my wife Angela of course. Thanks to the great Swiss invention of follow-me tandem we could attach Juris bike and de-tach it from time to time if traffic allowed. The bigger challenge was to find enough storage for our luggage which lead to the ``convoi exceptionnell'': two trailers in row behind my bike.

A cinque anni esatti di distanza dal 29 agosto 2003 in cui scoprii questa affascinante montagna, mi ritrovo dunque a calcare i 2341 metri del monte Helmos o Aroania [348], terza vetta della penisola dopo il Taigeto e il Cillene. Quest'ultimo è vicino e ben visibile, con il suo ampio costone sul quale Ercole si sedette a suonare le nacchere di bronzo per scacciare gli uccelli della palude Stimfalia... Quella fatica - la sesta - fu anche l'ultima che l'eroe portò a termine nel «piccolo mondo» del Peloponneso; per le altre sei avrebbe dovuto aprirsi al «grande mondo» - il Mediterraneo e anche oltre - spaziando dal Caucaso, dove si impadroní della cintura di Ippolita, fino là dove il Sole va ogni giorno con il suo cocchio a riposare, sul lontano Atlante marocchino, dove colse i pomi delle Espèridi.

From June 16 to August 1 2008, I cycled from Alta to the North-Cape, there I started a 7-week trip through Finland Sweden Denmark Germany Netherlands Belgium and France back to Switzerland.

Day 3 Vilshäred to Kärradal

The day started early. Although the campsite itself was quiet, the road next to it had a surprising amount of traffic. Added to this there was someone racing around in the middle of the night on a moped without a silencer.

At around seven our neighbours decided to start rooting around their car for something vitally important ('oh my God where is my Thermarest inflatable dialysis machine I need it right now' or something similarly life threatening) and by quarter past, it was clear neither of us was going to get any more sleep.

'Oh well' we thought, 'there is always a shower to look forward to'.....Which in retrospect was another of those things you shouldn't say on cycling holidays. For Vilshäred campsite introduced us to peaceful and neutral Sweden's secret weapon: a variation of Chinese water torture known as 'the one kroner shower'.

It was an unforgettable tour of contrasts: from the baking sun in Sweden to the rain and floods in Norway. The gorgeous Swedish coast versus the majesty of the Norwegian fjords and glaciers.

The legend that is the Passo Stelvio had been on my itinerary for a few years. Between us, we'd expanded that to include the equally legendary Mortirolo and Gavia passes, and anything else we'd regard as a bonus!

I began my first bike tour in Asia. A few years after I went to South America for another tour. My latest tour was a year through Africa. I am back in Canada to make enough money for another tour, hopefully this one will last at least 6 years or more. I will have 3000+ photos when I am finish with my Asia section.

Blackness you could touch. No moon to guide us. No bike lights only Simon's tiny maglite. The road was barely a path, which pinged and cracked as we cycled along it. Simon held the torch in his mouth, and its light wound a curving trail on our ''road.'' Several times we almost crashed into one another. Mumbled curses firing from Simon, unable to release the full volley for fear of dropping his light. Undoubtedly, this was to my advantage and I was able to retaliate with much vitriol, winding him up even more.

In 2008 the Hannover Bike Boys flew to Corfu and set off on a tour through Albania and Montenegro. Both countries are easy to visit challenging to cycle. We had no problem finding accommodation and decent food and beer, the scenery was wonderful but the cycling was hard with several high (1000m) passes.

Per un paio d'anni, praticamente ogni domenica mattina durante il nostro giro in bici, il ritornello è sempre stato quello e cioè l'idea di un viaggio in bici che durasse qualche giorno e non solo le quattro, cinque ore domenicali.

Le strade di casa nostra ormai percorse in bici decine e decine di volte cominciavano ad avere l'orizzonte della cyclette in camera e dunque la domanda diventava sempre più martellante ``Nemo in Francia in bicicreta ??'' (Andiamo in Francia in bicicletta ??). Non ci è voluto tanto tempo per organizzare questo ``over 50 tour'' con lo spirito del cicloturista o ciclo viaggiatore e cioè con il preciso intento che velocità e media oraria non dovessero essere la nostra preoccupazione. Perché in Francia? Perché l'idea è nata per raggiungere la città di mia moglie Valence (Drome) un centinaio di km a sud di Lyon e perché in Francia si mangia bene e perché in Francia c'è del buon vino e perché in Francia i ciclisti sono veramente rispettati.

This is the website and travelogue of The Project VELAIA. 22 year old velosopher, environmentalist and often minimalistic outdoor adventurer Daniel N. Lang has decided to go around the world by recumbent and upright bicycle after finishing an epic journey of more than 17.000km from Paris to Beijing as a rider of the Beijing to Paris 2007 Carfree Rallye, following coastlines for hundreds of kilometers, crossing deserts during mid summer in the Middle East, Central Asia and China and climbing some of the highest passes of the world under extreme conditions in the starting Tibetan winter.

After Eurasia he cycled Australia, New Zealand and the United States and is now on a tour through the South American Andes, starting in Caracas, Venezuela and cycling his way down to Chile at the time of writing this (beginning of September 2008).

In summer 2008 we combined sun, salsa, lost of other good live music, mojito's, snorkelling and cycling in an amazing and difficult to understand country. We cycled 33 days through the west and the east off Cuba. I visited almost 25 % of the world but saw never a stranger country then Cuba; but it was wonderful.

11 day trip from Inverness, onto Lewis, up to the top and then all the way down to Barra. Fantastic places including the legendary St. Kilda.

This November, Simon Evans and Fearghal O'Nuallain will begin the first Irish circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle. Their unsupported expedition will cover over 30,000km, passing through 30 countries and some of the highest, lowest, driest, coldest, warmest and loneliest places on earth. In doing so, they will be promoting the positive contribution that cycling can make to mental health and the environment, raising 100,000 euro for Aware and highlighting climate change.

In the middle of the day I took refuge in the grove at the edge of the rice field. A couple of Pakistanis stopped their political debate, turned over to me and asked:

``What is the reason for your trip to Pakistan?''

``A mistake'', I replied.

I spent 30 days on this extraordinary island and came back literally reinvigorated by this unique experience and the inspiring encounters made during the trip.

As soon as you leave the biggest towns and you reach the ``brousse'' (French for bush), it feels as if you had traveled through time. Madagascar is a poor country, but the richness of its nature (where it is still preserved) and the hospitality and kindness of its people more than make up for the hardships of road-travel...

Reading Calmac's `Explore' brochure on the ferry from Claonaig to Lochranza rekindled my desire to visit the Outer Hebrides. My Mum and Dad had taken the boat to Barra during their courting days and forever regaled us with tales of rough seas where everyone on board including the crew were sea sick apart from them. Then when queuing for the boat at Brodick, I watched as lots of fully laden pannier clad bicycles disembarked.

I'm not getting any younger and the rucksack no lighter so a bike seemed the best way to carry the weight whilst sparing my vertebra. I resolved to take the boat from Oban, cycle from Barra to Lewis and return on the Stornoway to Ullapool ferry. The final details, including the logistics of getting self and bike to Oban and back from Ullapool seemed the least of my problems. Oh, and I needed a bike!

We slept next to the ocean with the waves crashing by and some truck traffic jake braking by our campsite. Not as cold as last night, but a good night overall. We had a strange Elvis sighting by our campsite; he was sleeping next to our camp with his trusted Mexican hound dog (he barked in Spanish).

A seven day cycle trip from Nice in France to Santa Susana on the Costa Brava in Spain, a fabulous cycling adventure of 457 miles mostly keeping right on the coast and including some off road tracks such as the 'digue a la mer' going through the Camargue National Park to the seaside town Saint Marie de la Mer.

Ten day tour of the western islands and coast of Scotland - Skye, Outer Hebrides, Mull and Ardnamurchan. Beautiful beaches, mighty headwinds and plenty of sheep.

Nachdem wir einige Tage in Bangkok verbracht haben, sind wir mit dem Zug nach Norden gefahren, wo wir von Nong Khai bis Sukhothai 580 km radelten. Anschließend haben wir Chiang Mai und Ayuthaya besucht.

Wir haben uns in diesem wunderbaren Landstrich fünfzehn Tage lang von dem hier herrschenden Wind voran treiben lassen. Schöne Landschaft, guter Wein und die romanische Kunst geben einen guten Rahmen für eine vergnügliche Fahrt.

This was our first tour of the season and we have new bikes. In the Internet we saw a site describing a new bike route connecting Prag and Paris and decided to follow the French section. After cycling from here to the Rhine, we rode through Alsace-Lorraine, the Champagne Region and enter Paris along the Canal de l'Ourcq. We followed river valleys and canals, but still were in for a lot of climbs before we reached our goal.
