Who's afraid of the crocs?
by Igor Kovse, tour started August 2010, submitted 5 October 2010

It's been a long time since my last wheel revolutions in Africa. I've been avoiding the Black Continent, beating around the bush, choosing other cycling destinations, but now I can't delay it any more. Despite the headaches with obtaining the visas and nightmares about lions lurking in the tall grass beside the road, I must face the challenge. Besides, it's the last continent where my current touring bike hasn't been yet.

Another late summer tour to the Lower Austrian Alps
by Iris Mueck, tour started September 2010, submitted 3 October 2010

A tour to romantic sideways to the inner Lower Austrian alps. Very good and inviting late summer weather 'called me to order'... The late summer weather has been remaining for another day... The circle to the lower Austrian alps comprises round 120 kilometers in total. Starting nearby Payerbach..., hitting the Northern part of the Styria county... including climbs: Preiner Gschaid, Lahnsattel, Kernhofer Gscheid... Lucky as I was, a tracker passed, and I have been able to slip into the wind shade... This tracker pulled me round 45 kilometers with a speed above 40 kilometers/hour... Distance from Hohenberg to Sankt Poelten... The result: a wonderful speed average (28 km/hr)

Eurovelo 6 Frankreich - Teilstrecke Basel nach Besancon und retour, ca. 300km
by Alois Mayr, tour started September 2010, submitted 1 October 2010

The Pielachtal circle has been 100 kilometers in total. Starting nearby Sankt Poelten (Austria). Enjoy the pictures! Good luck to all the followers!

My Styrkeproven
by Iris Mueck, tour started June 2000, submitted 9 September 2010

Well, I have participated this tour 4 times. [...] It is partly a race. The Norwegian teams are very strong. They do the distance of 540 kilometers in less than 14 hours, which results in an average of round 40 kilometers/hr.

There is a rather 'high' mountain to climb. The Dovrefjell mountain is only round 1.000 meters high. But remember: you start at sea level. And as all the little rivers cross the climb, you got the feeling you do this mountain three times... There is only one receipt to finish the tour: ride your own speed! Feel well. Do not burn out in strong groups. Lillehammer is key station. Only 180 kilometers left to head for Oslo. [...]

Keep in mind: the big teams ride in groups and do not like others to take advantage of the group. I learned quickly, as one of a group rider pushed me out of road. My warning 'if you do it again...', was not heard. He repeated: 'if you quarrel, we are forty, if like to can discuss it with all our tour guys...'. No way! Stay out of teams!

Tour de Brittany 2010
by Hugh Morgan, tour started August 2010, submitted 7 September 2010

This describes our nine day family tour around Western Brittany starting in Gouarec on the Brest-Nantes canal. We did about 30 miles day carrying our own luggage and staying in small hotels and bed and breakfasts. My wife and youngest daughter were on a borrowed tandem and my older daughter and I were on our own bikes which we brought from home on the roof rack. We had various people tell us that Brittany was flat or hilly and we didn't really know what to expect but take it from me it was hilly. Overall we had a great time.

Corsica from 08. until 23 Mai 2010
by José Rössner, tour started May 2010, submitted 7 September 2010
language: en, de, nl

I spend this year my spring break in Corsica. An ideal country to test my new Cannondale bike with electric components from Bionx. (Motor, battery and display). A mountainous island, big enough to cycle around a fortnight. By train, I'll go from Zurich to Livorno. A ferry of ``corsica ferries'' will take me to Bastia. Here I begin to circle counter clockwise around Corsica. First I'm going up to Cap Corse, then via Saint Florent, Calvi, Porto, Ajaccio and Sarténe to Bonifatio, the very south of the island. Northbound I'll spend a few days in the inland mountains.

A bike tour through the Netherlands
by José Rössner, tour started July 2010, submitted 7 September 2010
language: en, de, nl

From 05th. to 20th. July 2010 we cycled through the Netherlands.

We had exceptionally good weather. (25 ºC to 39 ºC) On day 8 a violent thunderstorm, which doesn't occur every year, forced us to search for a shelter half an hour. Even fire brigade, Police and ambulance were mobilized. Trees were uprooted and in the neighbouring village, caravans were literally whirled through the air and landed in a pond.

Two New Zealanders heading East across the landmasses of Europe and Asia
by Emma and Justin, tour started March 2010, submitted 5 September 2010

We're Emma and Justin, two New Zealanders who have 'gone cycling' after six years working and living in London.

We talked about the possibility of a big trip quietly at first. We were on a train in England somewhere and we sketched a rudimentary map which plotted our way towards Russia. Our cycling trips became more ambitious, and we tested our enthusiasm for the idea by cycling the length of the UK (Lands End to John O'Groats) over three weeks in 2009. After 6 years living away from New Zealand we decided it was time to pack up London lives, quit jobs and go.

We have been on the road since March 2010 and intend to reach the edge of Asia by March 2012. Our website documents some of the places we've discovered on our travels.

Myrtle the Turtle Trike Tour

My plan is simple: ride as long as it is fun!

In July 2007 I closed the door behind me to start my first trike tour. I had no idea how far I would get and this tour took me from Canada to Guatemala. I had such a good time I continued on spending 9 months cycling New Zealand and Australia. In 2009 I cycled through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.

Through the lands of Kiwis & Kangaroos by bike.
by Federico and Claudia, tour started October 2007, submitted 30 August 2010

In October 2007 we started pedalling across Australia. The point of departure was Darwin, and from there on the first week of December, almost 5,600 kms later we reached Sydney.

From Sydney we flew to Christchurch to cross the South Island of New Zealand. We changed our initial route and pedaled the whole South Island. This took us a lot more time as we thought (so beautiful landscapes and so tough mountains to climb on wheels...) therefore the plan to pedal on the North Island had to be changed...:(we rented a car in Wellington and reached Auckland almost 2000 kms later at the end of January 2008).

On our trip across the Kangaroos territory we crossed several Aboriginals' territories and national parks. Kakadu, Uluru and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas)... fantastic sacred places to bike!!. Before reaching Katherine we received rewards from Life and help to survive a 5 months old Joey... we pulled him out from his dead Wallaby mother's pouch.

On wheels we carried a message of freedom, peace, love, and the joy of life.

East by Northwest - 2008 solo cycle tour across North America
by Alex Grove, tour started March 2008, submitted 24 August 2010

From mid-March until late October of 2008 I cycled some 13,000 kilometres (8100 miles) across North America. I started from Victoria, British Columbia, slowly making my way north by bike and ferry to Anchor Point, Alaska, the most westerly point in North America reachable by continuous road from elsewhere on the continent. From Anchor Point I headed more or less south east, but not in a straight line, taking my time to explore and to visit, letting the wind and my whim dictate my route, eventually arriving at Cape Spear, Newfoundland, the most easterly place in North America.

By bike through north-eastern Europe
by Juuk Slager, tour started May 2009, submitted 18 August 2010

I made a trip by bicycle, starting in Gdansk (Poland), and then through Kaliningrad (Russia), Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, many days in Estonia, Russia (with a stay of 2 weeks in St-Petersburg). My bike needed some maintenance and repair, and I needed to learn some more Russian.

From there I cycled along the coast to Vyborg (still Russia) and took a ferry to Finland. From east to west through Finland, and as a final the really nice Aland-islands. By ferry to Stockholm, a few days in Stockholm. By train from Stockholm to Goteborg, and then the last part by bike from Goteborg to Kopenhagen. By train back to the Netherlands.

Many experiences in altogether 103 days of cycling. Main accommodation in hotels, guesthouses, B&B's and at many people's homes (thanks to Hospitality Club). A lot of practical information for people who think about cycling in these countries. I can really recommend you to cycle there.

I'm cycling from California to Argentina
by kilo, tour started May 2010, submitted 17 August 2010

I'm cycling from California to Argentina.

Thus far, the desert of Baja Mexico has taken all my expectations, pulverized them into a small jar labeled 'you wish!' and then at regular intervals, delivers a healthy dose of dust in my face. Luckily, my expectations were not that great to begin with, and have now lowered considerably, so the jar was emptied swiftly. However, I have had my fair share of 'WTF' moments. Baja, in all its glory, is deserted for a reason, mainly because the terrain is harsh and inhospitable. This makes for 'interesting' cycling, especially for someone like me who thought Baja was flat and not going to be too hot as it's the rainy season. Well, that jar of dust was opened quickly as my expected 100km leisurely descend into Ensenada, turned into a hilly, unpaved, insanely hot and dusty ride. Not one to let go of misinformation so easily, especially when it's of my own making, I continued down the coast in search of flatter and cooler surroundings.

Needless to say my search was in vain, and the true Baja revealed itself, small mountain ranges dominate the land, and with afternoon highs of 120/50c, and very little opportunities for shade, I found my experience coinciding with the environment, in all it's extremity.

East to West Bicycle trip in Bangladesh
by Sudipta Chowdhury, tour started November 2009, submitted 17 August 2010

I was planning for a bicycle trip since April of this year. I am glad that finally I did make it. I started from Jaintapur, Sylhet and paddled up to Banglabandha, Tetuliya, Panchagar about 560kms. It took me 8 days to complete this trip. For me it was not just a cycle trip but also mastering my fear! I did this trip alone so that I can learn what it is after the fear. I took only the India-Bangladesh border road. And I have learned a lot. In the way I had to stay in the school veranda or sometime people gave me shelter in their house. I am thank full to all of them who have helped me to complete this trip.

Hope you will like the pictures. Don't forget to leave your comment! Thanks, Sudipta.

Majorca again... has become another standard training tour... Staying at Palma de Majorca, we bicycled all the standard tour: we concentrated on Puig Major and the North coast. On the way back, we hit Valldemossa, a city with a lot of street restaurants, and coffee shops. The good thing: only downhill to Palma de Majorca... In Valdemossa you find signs of history: George Sand has been in Love with Chopin... and have been staying at Valdemossa...

Note: George Sand was a woman (who has dressed as man...) I like those confusions...! A recommended place to go in Spring time. April is the latest - in May the motor bicyclists arrive... Our natural enemies. Enjoy the pictures! Good luck to all the followers!

Nobody cares, if you take an apple for refreshment... Lana has the advantage of beeing near to the Passo Mendola, it lays on foot of Passo Palade (Gampenpass). Nearby the city of Meran, with a lot of cultures opportunities, e.g. Gardens of Trautmannsdorf. From Lana you may reach the beautiful Passo Lavazze with a 18 % steep climb, and the Sella Ronda. Moreover at Marlings you may reach the train, which can lead you to Spondinig (close to the entrance of the Stelvio Road) and Mals (close to the Passo Rescia). Enjoy the pictures! Croation Bicycle Tour 2005
by Iris Mueck, tour started August 2005, submitted 13 August 2010

Trying out opportunities in Europe, we decided to visit a friend, who lives in Crikvenica, a small town on the North shore of the Adria in the Velebit channel. The Velebit channel is known for heavy Bora winds. We have been lucky, not experiencing any disturbance by bad weather conditions. As we went down by train, we started the tour at Pivka (SLO), some kilometres before the boarder to Croatia. Rolling roads leaded us to Rijeka and further to Crikvenica. The distance Rijeka - Crikvenica was a nightmare: extreme heavy traffic with careless car drivers! A miracle, we survived... The next days we spent on the Island Krk. Crossing the Tito Most (the bridge over the Velebit channel) opened extreme scenic views to the seaside. The city of Krk had a lot of opportunities to relax. Our way back home leads us back to Rijeka, where we have taken the train back to Austria.

Bicycle Tour to the Austrian 'Waldviertel'
by Iris Mueck, tour started August 2006, submitted 12 August 2010

This Tour is not so far from our home... The city of Gmünd may get reached in a day ride (round 200 kilometres). We pedalled via the city Krems on Danube, the Krems river Valley North to the city of Zwettl. At Zwettl a wide range of gastronomic offers awaited us. Travelling further to the city Weitra another highlight has been hit: a local brewery.

At Gmünd, just before the Czech boarder we found a hotel. The very next day, we have been riding South to the river Danube. It has been so hot, as our bike tire has been gluing to the melted asphalt... Nearby the Danube, at Waldhausen we found a natural public bath. Right in the in the dam area of the local river. Refreshed we continued. Passing the well known Wachau. Night at a little hotel at Spitz on Danube. Riding home was easy from now on... Enjoy the pictures! Good luck to all the followers!

Palm Springs Tour 2010
by Iris Mueck, tour started February 2010, submitted 12 August 2010

I did it the usual way: taking the CalTrain down to Santa Clara and heading for Hwy 9 at Saratoga. This time, I have been confused - found the wrong way, met another biker who convinced me to ride up to Skyline Blvd. via the Old Page Mill Road. I should have been warned: this road is very steep and with all my luggage (two saddle bags) and absolute no-training at all, it has sucked all my power of. [...]

What a challenge! Freeways surround San Bernardino. Not made for bicycles. Luckily I found the entrance to the San Timoteo Canyon Road. So, I escaped the freeways for a while. Not knowing, I will re-enter Hwy 10 again. There was no way out at the city of Banning. I have been riding on Hwy 10 at least for more exits: Then I found, there is a little side road after the Hwy fence. I slipped through the fence and have been continuing riding safe of the sideway of Hwy 10. Hwy 111 has taken me down to Palm Springs, where I arrived pretty late in the dark after a 200-kilometer ride. [...]

Again: Palm Springs is not made for bicycle riders. It is surrounded by the San Bernardino mountains in the North and the San Jacinto mountains at the South. Riding down to San Diego and Tijuana was a sort of deja-vu. San Diego's Old Town has not been so busy as time I have been there with Anne. It looks to me: California is in a sort of economic recession. Enjoy the pictures! Good luck to all the followers!

I did a lot of travels on occasion of my professional career... Covering 'Asia' as a sales manager. Often I have taken my mountain bike with me. Left it at the luggage counter at Singapore's Changi airport. This time, I went to Kathmandu.

Friendly people. Sometimes hard to understand (Indian accent). Wherever you go, they like to sell you something (...and never give up, even if you say 'no'... A rather cheap place, except the 'entrance fee' to Nepal... The hotel has organized an accompanying taxi. Use of a tour guide or an accompanying taxi is no shame.

Foreigners have to give the locals a job. That' s what it is for the last 100 years and longer. My daughter made the Annapurna round, a walkway for tourists. And one (paid) guy kept her rucksack all the way... That's the way it is! Enjoy the pictures! Good luck to all the followers!
