George Christensen has been cyclotouring for decades, spending a good part of the year wandering around the world on his bicycle. He has biked the length of three continents (North America, South America, Australia) and one sub-continent (India). Included here are reports his travels since 1991. The Red Island
tour started October 2017, submitted 3 January 2018 Africa: Madagascar
language: en, nl
Madagascar is a unique island in every respect. Because of its geographical isolation for millions of years there is a unique and diverse flora and fauna. Besides, the people that inhabit the large island also have their own unique cultures, housing, arts and music. I have four weeks to explore the extraordinary island with Willem Hoffmans. |

My goal for this Tour was to visit all of the major inhabited parts of the former supercontinent of Gondwana. Today, those places are mostly located in the Southern Hemisphere. Another aspect of my plan was to avoid long airplane trips by crossing oceans on container ships. That part of my Tour frequently caused problems, but I did hold fast to that idea, more or less. I traveled alone during 40 months and covered a little over 86,000 km by bike in 44 countries. My primary interest was the simple joy of cycling in new places, but I also concentrated on Natural History, Flora and Fauna, Ancient Sites and Diverse Cultures. My site contains sections describing Tour preparations, detailed logs, photos, posts written during the Tour, and a collection of essays written once it was complete. |
Cycling Madagascar
tour started June 2008, submitted 13 August 2008 Africa: Madagascar
I spent 30 days on this extraordinary island and came back literally reinvigorated by this unique experience and the inspiring encounters made during the trip. As soon as you leave the biggest towns and you reach the ``brousse'' (French for bush), it feels as if you had traveled through time. Madagascar is a poor country, but the richness of its nature (where it is still preserved) and the hospitality and kindness of its people more than make up for the hardships of road-travel... |
