|Tour of Western Crete
tour started June 2019, submitted 14 June 2019
This was a great trip. I often think that I might improve an itinerary if I were to travel to an area again but not on this occasion. The scenery was stunning, the roads very quiet and the places I stayed in all had good places to sleep and eat in. It might be that there is a narrow travel window, with the winter too harsh in the mountains and the summer too hot. If however you can travel at this time of year, it is a great cycling destination which other cyclists have yet to discover.

|Cefalonia: Sami, Fiskardo, Myrtos
tour started September 2012, submitted 12 November 2012
(M. Noble)
A Myrtos under a few umbrellas made of palm leaves, illions of white pebbles surround the bay. The stones (here as elsewhere) tell the history of art: the main element of the sculpture is the beauty of the most perfect design (Canova). What could be more perfect than these simple stones? They contain the secret of the environment and time. As a sculpture, "where the matter becomes environment, there is a stone weight of truth." (M. Noble)

My former managing director, who is an awesome bicyclist today has planned this tour carefully. Our all aim: to ride to the cradle of the world culture. Furthermore, we had a good ghost with us: Oxi Quassel, who explained all the details of the archeological sites and museums. We have visited the archaeological sites & Museums of Athens, Delphi, Olympus, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Corinth & Aigina...; in the very last moment we hit the Greek National Museum at Athens... We spent a day of at the beautiful Island Hydra (no cars...!)

Da lì a là is an Italian expression meaning roughly hither and thither, and this summarize my will, my restless temper of changing place every so often. I'm biking around Europe stopping from time to time when my attention is captured by an outstanding recipe a traditional food or a weird one. Pedalling alone is just fine, but together with other cyclists, especially from the country I'll be riding at the moment is just fantastic: less fatigue, more fun. You can get a look at the Euro-Tour map to get a gist of what'll be the route I'll follow in this year. If you're biking in the some zone, or nearby or you're going to start something similar and you'll like to have a ride together, let me know. Get in touch! Sys

|By tandem-bike around the Mediterranean Sea
tour started February 2011, submitted 27 December 2011

|Budapest to Corfu 2010 - Over the Balkans
tour started June 2010, submitted 27 October 2010
The Budapest to Corfu route was planned to be as diverse as we could get it. A mixture of terrain, landscape and seascape. Throw a variety of cultures into the mix and an ''off the beaten track'' feel to the trip and the result is a recipe for enjoyment.
To get us warmed up a nice, we had a comfortable flat section in Hungary. This was followed up by a gradual climb up the River Drina into the heart of the Balkans.
The big climbs started after Bajina Basta in Serbia and continued until Kolasin, a ski resort in Montenegro. A 40 mile drop off the western edge of the Balkans was enjoyed into Podgorica, the Montenegrin capital. A very picturesque section follows, to the south side of Lake Skadarsko. It is a single track road containing big steep climbs along a mountainside with fantastic views over the lake to Albania.
The route then follows the Albanian coastline down to Sarande and over to Corfu. The section after Vlore is very quiet, taking in the Logara Pass. Himare is a great stop over being a nice little resort which is unspoilt for now. Sarande is much bigger but still has it's plus points. The spare slack at the end of the tour was put to good use on Corfu.
|Two New Zealanders heading East across the landmasses of Europe and Asia
tour started March 2010, submitted 5 September 2010
Asia: Europe, England, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Mongolia, China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand
We're Emma and Justin, two New Zealanders who have 'gone cycling' after six years working and living in London.
We talked about the possibility of a big trip quietly at first. We were on a train in England somewhere and we sketched a rudimentary map which plotted our way towards Russia. Our cycling trips became more ambitious, and we tested our enthusiasm for the idea by cycling the length of the UK (Lands End to John O'Groats) over three weeks in 2009. After 6 years living away from New Zealand we decided it was time to pack up London lives, quit jobs and go.
We have been on the road since March 2010 and intend to reach the edge of Asia by March 2012. Our website documents some of the places we've discovered on our travels.

|Thessaloniki to Athens - September 2009
tour started September 2009, submitted 25 September 2009
A six-day tour from Thessaloniki to Athens in Greece. 637km cycled, stopping in Thessaloniki, Katerini-Paralia, Larissa, Lamia, Delphi and Thiva.
The highlight was definitely the hills and archaeological sites around Delphi, but we loved dodging the wild dogs, chatting with priests and lapping up Greek Salad every day.
Greece doesn't seem used to recreational cyclists, but it offers many spectacular views and challenging hills, and we encountered a warm welcome and considerate driving everywhere (even in Athens!).
|London to Athens 4 kids in poverty

25,000 children die each day mainly from preventable causes. These children are not dying from incurable diseases or causes. These children are dying from diarrhea, pneumonia, measles and malaria - things that cost pennies to treat or prevent.
My aim is to raise £25,000 by riding 4,000 kilometres from London to Athens with an average of 25,000 spins of my legs per day.

|Athens to Venice on pastry and pasta
tour started May 2001, submitted 18 May 2009
Cycling in Greece and Italy enabled us to see some of the most historic and scenically beautiful places of Europe, from ancient to modern. This online journal documents a cycle trip from Athens, across the Peloponnese, and up the Italian boot. We climbed steep mountains, sped down the other side, sweated out the humidity of south Italy, struggled our way up to Gubbio, and enjoyed deserted resorts on the Italian coast. The food was the best, the scenery spectacular, and the drivers courteous.

In 2008 the Hannover Bike Boys flew to Corfu and set off on a tour through Albania and Montenegro. Both countries are easy to visit challenging to cycle. This is the website and travelogue of The Project VELAIA. 22 year old velosopher, environmentalist and often minimalistic outdoor adventurer Daniel N. Lang has decided to go around the world by recumbent and upright bicycle after finishing an epic journey of more than 17.000km from Paris to Beijing as a rider of the Beijing to Paris 2007 Carfree Rallye, following coastlines for hundreds of kilometers, crossing deserts during mid summer in the Middle East, Central Asia and China and climbing some of the highest passes of the world under extreme conditions in the starting Tibetan winter.
After Eurasia he cycled Australia, New Zealand and the United States and is now on a tour through the South American Andes, starting in Caracas, Venezuela and cycling his way down to Chile at the time of writing this (beginning of September 2008).

I'm at one of those grave intellectual impasses that have been known to bring even greater minds than my own to a standstill. I have an orphan sock. Trivia, you say. Ha! I think not.
The cause of this problem is surely the work of that Slovakian KGB Agent, foolishly disguised as a laundress in Svolen. She stole it, I'm sure. Probably for a DNA sample to impress her superiors in Bratislava. They've been following my every move since the kustoms agent in Warsaw asked me the purpose of my visit to Poland. When I answered ``vacation'' the disbelief on his face gave him away. What, doesn't anyone go to Poland on vacation?
But back to the real problem, the orphan sock. The purists among cycle tourists would say, ``Throw it away, it's excess baggage. And while you're at it, cut three inches off that over-long toothbrush handle.'' But the Calvinist in me says, ``Save it. It's a good sock, nearly new.'' I've already reduced the weight of my baggage by losing its mate. Maybe I'll lose another and be back to even and lighter still.
